This project aims to undertake the first systematic analysis of English transferware ever made in Portugal found in archaeological sites dated from late 18th century to late 19th century. English transferware, due to the privileged political, economic and cultural relations between Portugal and England, is found abundantly in archaeological contexts from different social and economic backgrounds, and will influence directly the production of Portuguese transferware which started in 1860. However, these ceramics suffer from a paucity of research, and this project will provide a much needed base of knowledge from which further studies can be conducted. Four different archaeological contexts will be the base of this work where trade, consumption, identity and consumerism will be debated.
