An Inventory for the Portuguese Submerged Cultural Heritage

Breve descrição do conteúdo

Climate change is impacting the cultural heritage faster and more violently every year that passes, and threatening us with its destruction, both on land and underwater. There is a certain urgency in the present project, because it is difficult to imagine a healthy society that is completely oblivious to its past. Our roots, our identity, and our values are a consequence of our history, and continuity lends a sense of meaning to our lives.

The underwear cultural heritage is invisible because it is submerged, and its needs to be inventoried, studied, and shared. Portugal does not have a functioning database of the underwater cultural heritage and this paper is about an effort to develop one that is a research tool, a cultural asset to be shared with the public, and a management tool that may help the government agencies in charge of the cultural heritage to plan, make diagnostics, prognostics, and plan actions of study, protection, and publication of this important part of the country’s cultural heritage.

Inovação e impacto

The ultimate goal of this project is to understand the Portuguese maritime cultural landscape and reflect over the importance of the sea in the history and culture of the country.
